We thought perhaps Connecticut residents take the change of seasons for granted, but we were wrong about respondents to this week's survey. More than 60 percent said the New England foliage is their favorite thing about autumn, followed by festivals and fairs, and football. In this survey about fall things beginning with the letter "F", the results were:

Which of the following do you like most about autumn?

  • Foliage - 2,164 (62%)
  • Fashions - 121 (3%)
  • Football - 425 (12%)
  • Food - 174 (5%)
  • Festivals and Fairs - 581 (17%)

Your comments:

"This was ever so easy! FOOTBALL! I love Halloween, but other than that Football is the only fall sport that matters! Touchdown Pats!" L.J.N., East Haddam

"The fairs are nice for drinking beer, eating 'til we explode and walk around and smoke cigars. Y'all got to keep your chlosterol up so y'all got to eat a lot of fried taters, fried dough, fried donuts, fried vegetables, heck at our house we even fry the cholesterol! And being outside, there ain't no one to bug you much with a cigar, 'specially if it's windy!" Bubba, Forestville

"There is absolutely nothing about autumn in Connecticut that I dislike. The colors, the food, the nip in the air - it is all wonderful. I spend the entire year looking foward to Labor Day weekend. From then 'til Valentines Day is just a non-stop holiday for me and my family and friends.

And out of those six months, autumn is my favorite. There is so much to do and so much to see. We live in and close to the most beautiful places to be in the fall. Even the air tastes better.

Out of everything, there is a sense of growing wonder and excitement in the fall. Everything is changing and everyone is so alive and celebrating the fruits of their hard work, that you can't help but being caught up in all of it." J.B., Naugatuck

"Actually, the best part of autumn is Death To All Bugs!" J.L., Ashford

"Autumn is the best time of the year mainly because you can dress up or down. The ninety degree days we've had is not my type of weather." J.D., New Haven

"Sorry to say, but I don't look forward to autumn in New England. The shortened days curtail my outdoor activities (it's dark after work) and portend cold weather to come. I have to change from airy, light-weight clothes to wearing layers that cover my limbs and torso. Their colors are dark, the fabrics heavy, not airy. For me, the fall foliage is one bright visual moment, a kiss, before we have months of subdued, muffled existence indoors. I don't like the cold or enjoy outdoor winter sports, and find digging out to get to work (snow!)no longer fun. You can imagine that my sweetest dreams are of spring and summer!" B.R., Bloomfield
